The historic center of Finestrat was the scene today of a massive event to mark March 8, International Women’s Day. With the motto “Dones que fem poble” more than 100 “fanalets” made by women from Finestrat already color the sky of Carrer Fonteta and Carrer Nou. The event has brought together a large audience to inaugurate these lanterns and also the exhibition “Women who paint women” by l’Escola Puig Campana Art.
In her speech, the Mayor, Nati Algado, stated that “ in Finestrat we are fortunate to have active, creative women committed to the social and cultural life of our town. This event is a testament to that: women who create, who teach, who share their talent and who, through their work and involvement, contribute to strengthening the social fabric of Finestrat.” She also referred to the slogan promoted this year by the Generalitat on the occasion of March 8: “Choose yourself every day”, dedicated to women’s self-love. “A missatge that remembers that equality is also built through everyday decisions: when we educate in respectful values, when we generate opportunities, when we promote participation and when we recognize the talent of the players and the gifts in all areas.
For her part, the Councillor for Equality, Mª Teresa Pérez, highlighted that this is the first March 8th with a woman at the head of the Mayor’s Office of Finestrat. And he called on the youth to take up the mantle of a path ” in which we have made progress, although there is still much to be done .”
The President of l’Associació de Dones, Teresa Climent, and former teacher, insisted on the importance of education in equality “from a very young age, both in the educational field and within the family.” And he recalled the importance of keeping alive the spirit of this Association “which is not of Housewives, but of all the Women of Finestrat.”
On behalf of l’ Escola Puig Campana d’Art, with more than 40 works exhibited in the streets of the historic center under the title “Women who paint women”, teacher Mª Carmen Llinares , thanked the City Council for the opportunity that they have given them “so that art continues to be a place of meeting and freedom of expression”. The works exhibited today can be visited from Wednesday, March 11th until March 27th at the Museu de Finestrat.
At the end of the route through Fonteta and Nou streets, a commemorative bracelet for March 8th, made by the users of the Association of People with Disabilities of Benidorm and Region (ASMIBE), was distributed among the attendees. (PRESS OFFICE.8.3.2026)
