What are Next Generation funds?


On 21 July 2020, and in order to alleviate the effects of the social and economic crisis created by the coronavirus pandemic, the European Council reached an agreement for the launch of the European Next Generation programme, which is the largest temporary stimulus instrument ever financed by the European Union. and whose amount amounts to an amount of 750,000 million euros (at constant 2018 prices).

What injection of resources do they entail?

The Next Generation EU initiative is made up of the following programmes:

Two new programs are created:

- Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), will help the 27 member states, through direct transfers and loans, to increase public investments and undertake reforms that contribute to the recovery of the economy and employment. It will be endowed with 672,500 million euros, which represents almost 90% of the Next Generation funds.

- React EU, a new initiative, endowed with 47,500 million euros, which continues and expands the measures to respond to and repair the crisis. These resources will be implemented through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD).

+ In addition to these two new programmes, Next Generació will provide additional funding to existing programmes: Just Transition Fund, Invest EU Programme, Resc EU, Rural Development, Horizon Europe.
