The President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, together with the Minister of Agriculture, Water, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Barrachina and the General Director of the area, Lourdes Pérez, visit Finestrat to follow, first-hand, the evolution of the recovery and modernization works of the irrigation pond of l’Alhambra. The mayor, Nati Algado, accompanied the President on this visit together with the First Deputy Mayor, Víctor D. Llinares, the Councilor for Works, Guillermo Lloret, the Councilor for the Environment, Estela Álvarez and the mayor for Security, Beatriz Quintillán.
Thus, the Head of the Council stressed that the Generalitat is supporting infrastructures that really change the day to day and that the irrigation pond of L’Alhambra is an example of this: a safe, modern infrastructure designed to take advantage of every drop of water. The action that is being carried out consists of the re-waterproofing and improvement of the irrigation reservoir, which serves about 400 hectares of orchards, since its impermeable sheet had exhausted its useful life, which made it necessary to replace it. The Council has allocated more than €440,000 to this.
For her part , the mayor, Nati Algado, thanked the support of the Generalitat to make this action possible. “As you know, efficient water management is one of the top priorities of this government. For this reason, it has been essential to go hand in hand with the Generalitat which, on this occasion, has allocated €450,000 to renovate the L’Alhambra reservoir. It was necessary to intervene to waterproof the sheet of the pond, which is already 21 years old, thus maintaining its efficiency and functionality, in addition to guaranteeing all safety measures”. “The objective, According to the first local authority, “to maintain that water for the irrigation of our orchard, to guarantee that farmers and our lands receive those drops of water. Without this work it would have been very difficult. So from the City Council and also from the Community of Irrigators “Los Molinos” that manages this reservoir, we are completely grateful to the Generalitat for this investment that is close to € 450,000 “.
The Minister of Agriculture, Miguel Barrachina, said that “the best tribute we can pay to our farmers is to be able to recover this irrigation pond to ensure that the water and the hectares of cultivation in the orchard that surrounds us are not lost. In this time of climate change, it is essential to stock up on water. For this reason, we put the regional government of the Generalitat at the disposal of irrigators to modernize this pond so that they can have the 42 million liters of its capacity”.
Specifically, the work carried out in recent months has consisted of replacing the sheet, which has already completed its useful life, the creation of a new emergency drain, as well as the improvement of various hydraulic elements to control drainage and the safety of the installation, whose surface area is 34,110m2. This reservoir, which dates back to the year 2,000, has a capacity of 51,000m3 and is located in the vicinity of La Font del Molí. The infrastructure is used by the “Los Molinos” Irrigation Community, whose board chaired by Vicente Martínez was also present at the visit.
For the drafting of this project, the City Council had the support of the Alicante Provincial Council, through Ciclo Hídrico. And the execution of the work is 100% financed by the Generalitat Valenciana, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, with an investment of € 440,000. The work is expected to be completed next May.
