And in the children’s and young people’s workshop they will experiment with coloured volcanoes, homemade slime, static electricity or towers of rainbow liquids
They will start in the morning on the 11th at the “Puig Campana” and “Balcó de Finestrat” educational centers. It will be with a workshop in which they invite students to make a “biopic” about a woman scientist. “We are going to invite the children of 5th and 6th grade of Primary School of Finestrat to shoot a biographical film about women who have left their mark on science such as Hedy Lamar, a well-known Hollywood actress and precursor of the Finestrat Primary School. They will have to investigate the figure of these women, their contribution to science and how their discoveries have influenced the evolution of our society. Then they will reflect it in a biopic. So they will work in teams, they will share roles such as scriptwriter, cameraman, presenter, scientist… simulating the phases of making this biographical film, from the script, the presentation, the documentary-type interview with chroma key included… We think that it is a playful and very didactic way to awaken their interest in the role of women in science,” reported the Councilor for Equality, Mª Teresa Pérez.
This “biopic” workshop is aimed at about 200 students from the 5th grade of the CEIP Puig Campana and the 5th and 6th year of “Balcó de Finestrat”.
In the afternoon, the proposals continue at the Youth Centre with science workshops aimed at children. There will be two age groups to adapt the activity: from 3 to 7 years old and from 8 to 12 years old, with brief, participatory and very visual dynamics, designed to learn science through play.
For the little ones, experiments will be carried out such as Does it float or sink?, Colored volcano, Magic milk and Soap bubbles, focused on observation, the formulation of hypotheses and the discovery of cause-effect relationships.
The group of older participants will participate in experiences such as Homemade Slime, Tower of Rainbow Liquids, Static Electricity and The Bag That Doesn’t Melte, addressing basic concepts such as states of matter, density, electricity or heat absorption in a simple and attractive way.
“With these initiatives, from the City Council we reaffirm our commitment to equal opportunities, scientific education and the visibility of the role of women in science from childhood,” said Mª Teresa Pérez, mayor of Equality.
“Our objective, reported the mayor of Childhood and Youth, Sara Llorca, “is to awaken scientific vocations from an early age and encourage curiosity, experimentation and logical thinking. At the same time, we contribute to strengthening the role of women in the history of science so that today’s girls can know references for the future”. This programming is financed with a grant granted to the City Council of Finestrat by the Secretary of State for Equality within the call for “Aid for the eradication of Violence against Women, transfers for the development of new or expanded powers reserved for local entities in the State Pact against Gender Violence for the year 2025”.
