The Finestrat House of Culture will host this Friday, September 18, at 7:00 p.m. , the talk and discussion “Mothers of the Nile. Women’s Rights, Maternity and Childbirth in Ancient Egypt” , a cultural proposal that will allow you to approach the social reality of women in one of the most fascinating civilizations of Antiquity.
The presentation will be given by Fran Lozano , a popularizer specializing in history and Egyptology and head of the outreach project Egipteando , and José Luis Negro . Both speakers will address different aspects of women’s lives in Pharaonic Egypt, paying particular attention to their position within society, their rights, economic autonomy, motherhood, and the birthing process.
Throughout the talk, the role of women in different areas of Egyptian society will be analyzed, from the family and economic spheres to their presence in social and religious life. Issues related to motherhood and childbirth will also be addressed, offering a glimpse into daily life that allows for a deeper understanding.

Fran Lozano highlights the importance of approaching history from a social and human perspective: “The role of women, analyzing their legal position, their economic autonomy and their relevance within the family, social and religious sphere, allows us to better understand what society in Ancient Egypt was really like.”
The speaker also points out that the goal of these kinds of events is to show a closer and more complex historical reality: “Ancient Egypt was not just a civilization of pharaohs and pyramids. It was a profoundly human society, with family conflicts, passions, betrayals, and women who played a key role in its social structure. My aim is to show this closer and more complex reality that is often left out of the traditional narrative.”

Originally from Rafal, in the Vega Baja region, Fran Lozano carries out his educational work through Egipteando , a project dedicated to bringing the history and culture of Ancient Egypt closer to the general public through social networks and different cultural activities.
Passionate about history and archaeology since childhood, Lozano holds a degree in Egyptology from the University of Alcalá de Henares and further training in Archaeology from the University of Burgos. Throughout his career, he has participated in national and international conferences and has focused part of his research and outreach work on issues related to the society of Ancient Egypt.
His project, Egipteando, has reached a large community of followers on social media, where he combines historical dissemination, educational content, and approaches to different aspects of the Pharaonic civilization.
- José Luís Negro, popularizer and great enthusiast of Ancient Egypt
José Luís Negro has already participated in various activities in collaboration with the Finestrat City Council. He describes himself as a man with an “unwavering passion for Egyptology,” a passion that began in his childhood/adolescence, inspired by the legacy and vast libraries of my father and grandfather. For more than ten years, I have cultivated this admiration through rigorous and constant study.

Among their various studies and courses, we highlight:
- Egyptology – Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) via Coursera. Taught by Professors Dr. José Lull and Dr. Josep Cervelló. Comprehensive training on the history, language, religious beliefs, and culture of Pharaonic Egypt, including the Ramesside period.
- Egypt and the Valley of the Kings – Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) via Coursera. Taught by Dr. José Lull, Miquel Carceller, and other experts. This course focuses on the origins, discovery, funerary texts (such as the Amduat), and decline of this important necropolis.
The talk in Finestrat will thus allow for a deeper exploration of a topic that continues to generate interest: the situation of women, motherhood, and family life in Ancient Egypt , providing historical data and examples that will help to understand how that society was organized.
The activity is free of charge and open to all audiences interested in history, culture and Egyptology.
